 about  SLOW

The Social Life of Waste/Art (SLOWart) network is a collection of artists, writers, facilitators, gardeners and researchers based in southern Africa who work on/with/around and in waste/trash/garbage/discarded material.

The Network creates works of art and documents emerging bodies of social practices that will increase knowledge and awareness of re-use and re-purposing. The Network functions as a platform for participating community, research and artist organizations.

Through a series of conversations in the region in the form of facilitated workshops in various cities, the Network creates a space for learning new skills, sharing technical and theoretical knowledge, and of making works. Through a series of public activations and conversations, the network engages in public dialogue, produces educational content, and shapes popular consciousness and policies.

Funded principally by the Swiss Development and Cooperation Office in Southern Africa, the SLOWart Network is a project of the Capital Cities Institutional Research Theme at the University of Pretoria.
